Democrats Raise $12 Million After Top Court Draft Leak (Correct)

Democrats raised $12 million in the day after news broke about a draft Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, according to ActBlue, which processes online donations for Democratic-aligned candidates and groups.

The amount raised from the time of the Supreme Court news Monday night through midnight Tuesday was about three times the daily average of $4.2 million in donations ActBlue processed in the first quarter of this year, said Mike Naple, a spokesman for ActBlue.

While it was far less than the $70.6 million processed in the day after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, that was in September 2020 in the heat of a presidential election. The significant uptick in donations at the start of primary season indicates the issue could provide Democrats needed momentum in the midterm elections, when their House and Senate majorities are on the line.

ActBlue has helped raise billions of dollars for Democrats over more than a decade. It won’t be clear which federal candidates and committees received money until ActBlue reports to the Federal Election Commission this summer.
