Will Trump and Congress Extend TCJA Tax Cuts?

Key provisions from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 are set to expire Dec. 31, 2025. With a Republican-led White House and Congress, policymakers are projected to preserve a majority of the TCJA provisions, but they will need to find a source of funding for the extensions.

House Republicans put forward a plan to includes up to $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and at least $1.5 trillion in spending cuts across seven committees. Members added a measure directing that lawmakers can either find the extra half-trillion in savings or subtract that amount from their tax-cutting allowance.

Senate Republicans favor tackling Trump’s agenda in two separate bills, with tax overhauls coming after border security and defense are addressed. Trump has said he prefers one large bill.
