Research and development increased by $2 billion from fiscal 2017 to 2018 for a total of $44.6 billion. This category is dominated largely by defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin Corp., which owns $4.2 billion of the market value, and research universities such as California Institute of Technology, which claimed $2.7 billion. As agency spending increases, we may see obligations for more RTD&E in the coming years, especially as applications for artificial intelligence become more commonplace for agencies.
