A nonprofit group allied with House Republican leaders is pouring $7 million into television and digital ads opposing impeachment of President Donald Trump.
The $5 million in TV ads sponsored by American Action Network (AAN) began airing Monday. They target 18 swing districts held by Democrats, as well as two Republican-held districts. The TV effort is in addition to $2 million in digital and social media advertising running across 37 districts, including 30 represented by Democrats and seven by Republicans.
The spots are the latest escalation of a political air war over impeachment that has already seen millions of dollars spent. Supporters of the Democratic-led impeachment inquiry targeting Trump began sponsoring a seven-figure TV ad buy earlier this month calling on House Republicans in swing districts to hold Trump accountable.
The new GOP ads call on lawmakers to oppose impeachment and “get back to work on the issues Americans care about, like passing a new trade deal, creating good jobs, and securing our border,”saidthe group’s president, Dan Conston.
Most of the ads target freshman Democrats whose victories in the 2018 midterms helped Democrats take majority control of the House. One of the biggest TV ad buys is in the New York City district represented by Rep. Max Rose (D-N.Y.), according to Advertising Analytics, a firm that tracks ad purchases.
The group is sponsoring TV ads in the districts of two Republican lawmakers, Reps. Rodney Davis (Ill.) and John Katko(N.Y.). These ads praise them for “standing against impeachment and focusing on the issues that matter to us.”
