House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, a Nebraska Republican convicted Thursday on charges related to an illegal campaign contribution, should resign.

“He had his day in court,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Friday at a press conference at a House Republican retreat in Florida. “I think when someone is convicted it’s time to resign.”

McCarthy said he texted Fortenberry and will discuss his conviction with him today.

Fortenberry’s sentencing is set for June 28, the AP reported.
