What is federal management consulting?

It’s the business of helping agencies improve their performance by analyzing organizational problems and developing improvement plans.

Examples include multiyear strategy, communication and outreach, change management, process reengineering, acquisition, training and system requirement and selection plans. There are at least a dozen more types of services and an infinite number of variations in between.

Related work that follows these planning efforts also often falls to consulting firms, and includes actually carrying out whatever actions the plan recommended, such as drafting messages and briefings, monitoring timelines, organizing and facilitating meetings, establishing project management offices, etc. The government, of course, contracts for other kinds of operations support services not directly related to management, such as engineering and information technology (IT) system implementation.
